Conversations: Ready for a change

Hey Chris,

I need some serious help and guidance. I am sabotaging stuff in my life due to how I feel about myself. What do I do, where do I turn. I want to change this about myself.

Signed,

Ready for a change

Dear Ready for a change,

How about that?

You’ve broken the FIRST code to achieving a real and lasting change!

Don’t know what that FIRST code is?

Look around today. Many people want to blame everyone else for the state the world is in. They want to blame everyone for the state THEY are in.

Few want to break the code for how to change what’s happening to them. And you, brilliant soul, already have.

Figured it out, yet?

It’s the central answer to the timeless Serenity Prayer:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.

You have the wisdom to know that the thing you can change is…you.

My first question, Ready for a change, would be…how do YOU want to feel about yourself?

If you can remember a time when you felt a particularly good way about yourself, and things were popping and clicking for you, then you have access to that again.

It may have been the start of something new and exciting in your life, like learning something, trying something, meeting someone new or anything that took you to a really good feeling place for yourself.

Recalling those experiences can give you access to feeling good about yourself again.

I’ll give you an example, that I draw on at the beginning of any new change in my life. At one point in my career, I was asked to lead a global team of employees. I had NEVER led a team in my career. Sure I had been a manager, but that was directing people, not necessarily leading them.

Being the spiritual gal I am, I remember sitting at my desk and silently praying, “God help me become a leader.” That’s all I said. I hopped on a conference call and I was like a different person. I led the team with great confidence.

Since that time, well over 25 years, I use that experience to “remind” me. Whenever I have to take on ANYTHING new and a bit frightening, it’s become second nature to simply “remember.” I remember how I felt about myself as a new leader the first time and it’s as if something clicks. I am reminded of that confidence and how good I felt about myself.

Take some time, Ready for a change, and “remember.”

I guarantee that you’ve felt, before, exactly what you want to feel about yourself now. Write it down, create a mantra, do whatever it takes to…remember.

And when you’re about to self-sabotage, recall how you really want and can feel about yourself. Let that sweet memory give you strength and inspiration.

You can do it.

I believe in you.
