Conversations: Unchain my heart

Ugh Chris,

Why is self-discovery so difficult? I’m in my 30’s- shouldn’t I know myself by now? I feel as if I have invisible chains that bind me to a template of how I am supposed to live.

Why can’t I break away?

Signed,

Unchain my heart

~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Unchain my heart,
Can I say that this breaks MY heart?
We live in a society that convinces us that at a certain age, we should have it ALL figured out, and if we don’t there’s something wrong with us.
Ugh.
Have you ever read those stories about what people say at the end of their lives. You know…when, by then, they “should” have had it all figured out?
Here’s an example:
This list is from an article in The Guardian – The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying.
  1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
  2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard
  3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
  4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
  5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.
So let me ask you, Unchain my heart, are these things that we already know and  “should have figured out” by now?
Heck, we just lost millions of people in the era of Covid and people still went out and lived life, unprotected.
I got news for you my friend.
NO ONE has it ALL figured out at ANY age.
How do I know?
  • Because once you figure it all out, you’re no longer living.
  • You’re not living life as the adventure it’s meant to be.
  • You’re not learning anything new because you’ve shut yourself off.
  • And because you cannot continue to exist on the planet without change being ever-present.
As such, you can’t have it all figured out.
BEWARE anyone who tells you they have.
So first and foremost, congratulations on the clarity you have in your question.
Next, I want you to look at the list of the Top 5 and choose ONE that will NOT be on your list of regrets.
Living from that place is something you CAN figure out now. And perhaps when you feel so bold, come back and choose more from the list.
This living, learning and change stuff is for a lifetime, Unchain, and knowing that can help you break away!
Break the chain and soar my friend!
