Conversations: Deja vu

Hi Chris,

I’ve been experiencing something that happens over and over again.

I can’t seem to get control of it and I wonder if you have an idea of how I can take the reins here.

There are days when I wear grooves in the carpet because I’m moving so fast and it feels good. And then all of a sudden it all drops down again? Like I’m back at square one.

Why does this keep happening?

Signed,

Deja vu

Hey Deja vu!

It’s an interesting phenomenon and it happens far more than you think.

It can be so frustrating and stressful to be in this cycle of in the flow and then hit a brick wall.

It happens SO often that there is actually a name for it.

Ready?

It’s called…

BURN OUT

Yeah, I’m sure you didn’t see that coming…smile

But seriously, that’s what can happen if you keep wearing the grooves in the carpet, getting tons of things done and accomplished.

While forgetting to take a break and enjoy the results you’re creating.

We’re supposed to work in “flow,” not rushing waters. And the fact that you’re wearing grooves tells me that you’re creating this effect.

In every flow of water, there are breaks, stones, bends to keep the flow in motion. Those breaks, etc. give the flow a chance to regroup, reroute and smooth its progress. (Note the word break is used intentionally here!)

When you’re in flow, there are not grooves. It’s all smooth sailing until a break is needed.

How do you get into flow and sustain it?

Easy.

First, identify when you are IN flow.

When you’re in flow, time passes by unnoticed.

You’re relaxed and at your most creative.

Take the time to look at when this has happened and what were the conditions that allowed  you to just move and groove…in flow.

It can happen at certain times of the day, week or month. But I guarantee you that you’ve experienced it.

One other consideration…deja vu…

Slow down and focus on what truly matters…first.

Allow yourself to enjoy the process of completing something that gives you joy and flow.

Then, take note of what it was about that experience that:

  • made you feel good
  • made you want to feel that again
  • made you smile with self-satisfaction

Then you will know what to do to get yourself in flow again.

The ONLY “grooves” you want, deja vu, are when you’re grooving in flow, my friend.

Good luck!
