Conversations: Ready to change

Hi Chris,

I have been trying to improve myself and change my life for 2 years. I tried to learn new skills, studied hard and went into a new diet. But I had small to non good progress.

Why?

Signed,

Ready to change…

Hi Ready to change and congrats for taking care of yourself!

First, change is not easy. So I give you credit for being willing to try.

Second, and you’re going to hate this part.

Improving your life is a LIFELONG journey.

Why?

Because when you improve some aspect of your life, like learning new skills, you then discover there is a way to improve on or apply that learning in a new way…

It’s a bit of a vicious cycle, that’s actually good for you!

My first suggestion is to take the pressure off and remember that this is a journey with more new and exciting ways to grow, improve and expand all of who you are.

Next, and this may seem like a silly question…but did you write down what it was you wanted to change?

The biggest mistake we can make is to set a new goal for ourselves, work towards it without capturing the before, so that we can celebrate the after.

Here’s a personal example from my own journey…

I have been trying to do more writing. I want to write my next book. Ok, goal set.

  • Yet, I get wound up on the title, then stuck in determining the outline, and finally I forget what it was all meant for.
  • I joined a writing community that has resources to help you and I peek in there once in a while.
  • I bought a nice notebook and pens to inspire me.
  • I even sat down and started typing out a lot of the content.

Long story short, ready for a change…I couldn’t tell you when I started this journey, so that I could determine how far I’ve come…or not.

What’s frustrating for me about this is that I am a journal’er… I love to journal about things in my life, that do or don’t go well so that I learn from them.

So why didn’t I journal about the book?

Beats me…ironic, huh?

Take it from me, ready for a change…if you don’t know where you started you won’t know how far you’ve actually come.

However, take heart…you can start from where you are today.

Do you know why?

Because, this is, dare I say it again?

A LIFELONG JOURNEY!

So pick something you want to improve…one thing.

Write it down.

Track your progress at whatever interval feels right for you.

Then watch what happens…

And please let me know how it goes so that I can celebrate you!

~ Let life love you!
