Conversations: Close the gap

Hi Chris,

I’m an avid consumer of information, regularly diving into podcasts, books, TED talks, and more to expand my knowledge. However, I’ve noticed a gap between gaining insights and taking action on them. Do you have any strategies or tools to bridge this gap effectively?

Signed,

Hi Gap closer,

As a matter of fact I do…

However, I’ll begin with a question that may help YOU create effective strategies, now and in the future.

For what purpose are you consuming information?

If you begin with an objective in mind, it will help you to hone in on what you’re looking for, no matter what podcast, book, etc. you consume.

While I know that we all like variety, and it’s important to create a robust life, if we don’t have an objective in mind, it becomes a missed opportunity.

Let me give you an example from my own life.

Like you, I truly enjoy a variety of reading materials. I love books…hardcover, paperback, ebooks…love, love.

I also enjoy different genres, like mysteries, historical, self development, business, brain development and more.

The difference is….I know why I like varied genres and each serves a purpose for me.

  • Mysteries – entertaining and call on my brain to try to solve puzzles.
  • Historical – helps me appreciate where we are as a people and how far we’ve come.
  • Self development – important, not just because that’s what this website is about, but because I know that you’ll only go as far as you’re willing to develop yourself.
  • Business – helps me to learn new approaches, new strategies and keeps me energized about my own business.
  • Brain development – it is more about how to think clearly and critically, relative to every aspect of life.

It matters not the form or content, what does matter is the purpose.

So the best strategy I can give you, gap closure, is to begin to define the purpose for the information you’re consuming, first.

You’ll find that you’ll get so much more enjoyment, learning and experience when you do.

Good luck!
