Conversations: Oh look over there

Hello Chris,

Here’s one for you.

I try my best to focus on my goals. I took the time to identify them, write them down, look at them weekly, sometimes daily. So I am really committed and attached to achieving them.

But somehow I get distracted and go looking for something else to do. You know, like a squirrel climbing from branch to branch looking for the next nut.

What are some tips or tricks you’ve used to stay focused?

I don’t want to lose my mind going after nuts!

Signed, Oh look over there…

Ah, Oh look over there…

Join the rest of us squirrels working to find a nut!

Let’s reverse-engineer this motivation thing, shall we?

First and foremost, what DOES motivate you?

  • Is it eating all of your veggies to get to the best part of your plate?
  • Is it doing the tough meetings early so that the rest of your day rocks?
  • Is it, as my parents taught me, doing your homework as soon as you get home so that you could go outside and play longer?

Recognizing what DOES motivate you will help to inspire you when you’re feeling unmotivated.

Then you can use that insight to structure your day/time to play to your energized focus interval.

That’s first.

Next, I want to talk about this “need” to be motivated.

Who says you MUST be motivated?

This is allowing other people’s perspectives to actually DE-motivate you.

How’s that for a switch?

Motivation is an individual action, an individual choice, and an individual perspective.

You see, I am not motivated 24/7 but when I get focused on something, like responding to brilliant questions like yours…

Bay-bee, look out because nothing else gets in my way of being of service.

So look at the times in your life when you were unstoppable.

What “motivated” you then?

  • Was it pain or pleasure?
  • Something to get it over with or something you looked forward to?

There may be a pattern here that you can use when you want to get revved up.

That’s a start…

Finally, I just want you to give yourself a freaking break!

In life, there are times to have fun, times to work and times to do absolutely nothing.

Please let life have her way and when you’re ready to dig in, TRUST that you will.

~ Fear nothing. Love everything.
