Conversations: Trying to remember

Wow Chris,

I gotta share this with you…

A lovely lady said to me, that after a difficult time in her life, she is

“… still remembering who she is”.  That sounded so deep and painful to me.

Yet, I can relate.

Sometimes I wonder who the hell I am, on the daily… Which leads me to wonder, how do you REALLY know who you are?

Thoughts?

Signed,

Trying to remember

~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, Trying to remember…I know that this is a struggle for many of us.
Yet, I don’t think it’s because we CAN’T remember. I think it’s because we have created so many “personas” to keep us safe in so many situations, that we’ve buried who we truly are.
See if this is true for you…
When you’re at work and talking with your boss or peers there is a “work” persona you step into. You may have to curb any desire to swear, laugh out loud, etc. depending on the work environment and the expectations for behavior.
Then there’s the “non-work” persona when you slip into a more laid-back mode of being. You don’t censor your words or actions as much, because you feel you can “be yourself.”
Of course, when you’re involved in a relationship — with a deep friend or partner, there is still yet another persona that steps in.
So you see, trying to remember, once we’ve created all of these personas to keep us safe and sane in the world, we push down who we really are…and that’s the deep and painful piece you’re experiencing with this lovely lady.
What’s deeply powerful about the lovely lady is that she’s willing to “still remember who she is” and not default to how she shows up in the world. That takes courage.
Sounds like if you’re asking you, too, possess that courage.
If you’re willing to go down that path, know that it’s worth it. It may take some time to dig through all the layers of who you’ve been and the personas that kept you safe on this journey, but here’s what I know…
When you are truly ready to know who you really are, you will. The challenge is not in the discovery. The challenge will lie in the acceptance.
Remember…courage.
And since you’ve asked, the courage is within you…as is the answer.
Good luck in your journey,  my friend!
