Conversations: Let’s get it started

You know Chris, I have always wanted to kick start my own business, but just do not have the motivation to do what’s necessary.

Do you have any advice for how to get started?

Signed,

Well, let’s get it started, I happen to have a bit of experience with this if I say so myself!

Shameless plug — I even wrote a book about it…smile

But seriously, here’s the thing I really want you to hone in on…

And this is MORE important than finding a lick of motivation.

It’s what author and businessman Simon Sinek wrote a whole book about…”Start with your why.”

If you’re unsure of the “why” of starting your own business, the minute it gets hard, or frustrating (and it will), your business will take a back seat to your life.

And please don’t buy into the “do what you love and you’ll never work another day in your life.” It’s nice to say, but hard to practice when you have bills to pay.

Your next question may be, how do I discover my “why?

Great question and I’ve even got an answer…smile

Think back to a time, as a child or young adult, when you found there was something you really enjoyed doing. It was likely a way of helping other people, with something you loved to do.

It could have been helping someone younger or less fortunate than you to build a skill, learn something new, or discover something about themselves that only you could see.

This kind of insight will reveal what you’re most called to do and get great personal pleasure and satisfaction from.

That is the kind of information that helps you, not only in your “why” but makes it “sticky.” When it’s “sticky” nothing will deter you from achieving your goal.

Let me explain more clearly, by sharing my “why” and how I discovered it.

As a child, I would take out my school lessons and share them with the other kids in my neighborhood. They learned how to write cursive from my lessons…and I was all of 7!!! But it was my passion to teach and help those who didn’t have access to what I did as a child.

Fast forward to my time in corporate when I was sick and tired of being sick and tired, working in the madness. When the concept of coaching came into my view, I jumped on it. It was a way of helping others who did not have access to the experiences and lessons I did as a corporate professional.

At this point, I had close to 20 years of experience leading teams and programs and would be a great career coach. In fact, let’s get it started, my first business was called Aspire Career Services!

I followed my “why” and when the opportunity to leave corporate came and I jumped into my business, nothing else was needed to motivate me. I had clarity and joy in the “doing” of the business…even when it wasn’t fun. (and there are a lot of those moments…smile)

There you have it, let’s get it started, a long winded way of guiding you to get to your “why” and the motivation will find YOU!

Good luck and I can’t wait to see what you create in the world!

~ Let life love you!
