Conversations: Desperately seeking direction

Chris, I would love your opinion on this!

If a person currently feels disoriented in life, what is the moment when they should seek help?

Seeking help can mean asking questions, looking for a coach, or support in general.

Thank you so much!!!

Desperately seeking direction

Good question, desperately seeking direction!

I actually think that’s a personal choice…just as in whom you invest your request for guidance.

If the person feels disoriented, the first thing you would want to identify is the “why?”

  • Is it an inside job?
  • Is it because of someone outside of you?
  • Is it because of the environment you’re in?
  • Is is because you’re just tired and frustrated with…?

You see, gaining clarity with the “why” can point you in the best direction for support and the timing in pursuit of it.

When I am in that place of disorientation, I often go within and ask what’s “off” here?

Why do I feel “off” and what triggered it.

The answer helps me determine its cause and the best solution toward being “on” again.

Here’s an example…

I was given two programs to manage at work. I’m no stranger to running large programs, however I let this “stress me out.” I couldn’t understand why, because it’s no big deal for me…

I’ve led global teams of people in different countries, I’ve run my own consulting business and I had a successful corporate career. In this current career, while I’m learning more about the environment, at my core, I still KNOW how to do this…in my sleep!

I was disoriented and couldn’t figure it out.

So you know what I did?

I took a day off and read a good murder mystery.

Why did that help? It took me away and helped to focus on solving a puzzle. Which then helped me solve the puzzle of my disorientation.

I realized I was putting FAR MORE stress on myself than I needed to. So I had a talk with my manager and she said, “You’re doing great…and far more than I expected!” So that gave me permission to back off and relax a bit.

  • I could not have taken the step to talk with her, if I didn’t first acknowledge that I was “off.”
  • Then I needed to remove myself from the situation to view it from a detached perspective, by way of a murder mystery.
  • Then I knew who I had to talk to and when.

Clarifying what’s disorienting you is the first step before you seek help, desperately seeking direction.

Otherwise you seek the wrong guidance, from the wrong person…or the right guidance from the wrong person, or…well you know what I mean…

Get to the “why” and the path and choices become clearer.

~ Let life love you!
