Conversations: Driven

Advice please, Chris,

I’m driven to the point where my goals become almost an obsession. I’m always thinking about them, they consume most of my time and energy. All the rest takes a back seat.

To me, this is what it takes to make my dreams a reality.

I am not saying that nothing else matters but right now, my goals are my top priority. Those around me don’t agree. What do you think?

Signed,

Driven

~~~~~~~~~~
Well Driven, congratulations for being so passionate about your goals. It takes an enormous amount of conviction to identify and pursue a goal, in the manner you’re choosing.
Since you’ve asked for advice…
I wonder if you have the same passion for your well-being?
You see, to accomplish any goal in life, you:
  • must have a passionate belief in it
  • have the energy and commitment to pursue it
  • are willing to maintain a sense of wellbeing to accomplish it
You’ve likely heard of people like Bill Gates, Richard Branson and others who pursue their goals, like there isn’t anything else in their lives. However, few know that they also take a months-long (or more) break from what they’re working on, to simply…
Focus on their wellbeing.
They know that to achieve any goal, big or small, they must have the health, resilience and strength to see it through. Blindly focusing on nothing else, will produce less than ideal results.
What I am NOT suggesting is to decrease or dampen your passionate pursuit of your goals.
What I AM suggesting is that you give that same degree of passion to your self care, wellbeing and whole life, so that you can not only have the perseverance to achieve your goal, but the pleasure of enjoying the result.
There’s no sense in achieving a goal or goals and at the end of it all, become sick, sad and alone. That’s a recipe for regret. And that’s not what you want at the end of the day.
You want to know it was all worth it. And it won’t be, if you’re not in a good place to experience and celebrate it.
So I started my response by congratulating you on your drive toward achieving your goals, Driven.
Let me also congratulate you, for asking the question. It shows that you may already recognize that “more” is required. And that “more” is the best wellbeing of you.
Don’t lose sight of THAT goal.
