Conversations: Just plain stuck

Hi Chris,

I feel like I’mstuck’ in life, like I’m in a rut that I’m not sure how to get out of? I seem to lack motivation, direction and purpose in life.

Do you have any words of advice or ideas to get me moving and focused?

Signed,

Just plain stuck

Hey just plain stuck…I may have a FEW words…smile

The first of which you may not like…

However, know that I’ve been there.

You are stuck, because something is being “created” in you…and if you’re willing to allow it to be, the rut will disappear.

Let me make this plain.

When you’re stuck in a rut, it’s because you’re actually ready for something NEW.

Something new in your thinking, in your doing, in your being.

And you’re feeling stuck because you couldn’t access this NEW without being “still.” If you’re moving to and fro, you won’t feel like anything has to change because  your attention is firmly on what you’re doing.

But when you’re stuck, you’re asking for movement.

When I work with clients or even get into this place myself, I know it’s time to “reflect.” Meaning, what is it that I really want to do or enjoy doing that I may be avoiding but really wishing for?

Here’s an example.

About 18 years into my corporate career, I awoke one morning, looked at the ceiling and asked myself…”is this all there is?” I felt stuck, in a rut and unsure what I was going to do with this thing called my life.

I had been slightly interested in the “coaching” profession. After that somewhat distressing morning, I decided to look more closely at what “coaching” was and whether I would really enjoy it.

It turned out to be the thing that, literally, changed my life.

  • I went to coaching “school” and was certified.
  • I brought the “profession” into my corporate job and received awards for doing so.
  • I left my corporate gig to do it full time.
  • And even though I have returned to a full time job, I STILL do it.
  • I enjoy “coaching” via this blog and am in the process of writing my THIRD book that will serve to provides methods of “self-coaching.”

Yeah, I’d say that RUT, was a freaking blessing! smile

So here you are, just plain stuck, at the precipice of a HUGE opportunity. Allow this “stuck” place and rut to give you access to something you’re ready for. If you weren’t, you wouldn’t be here, trust me.

Then allow yourself to pursue what’s hidden at the back of your mind, sitting in the corner of your heart or wiggling in the pit of your stomach.

Something…is asking for your attention and you’ve been “paused” to allow it to be.

Let it.

It can and likely will, change your life.
