Conversations: Stuck and stagnant

Help me out Chris,

Feeling stuck & stagnant in life & NEEDING a change. Also just finding myself ending up in very similar situations & relationships over & over again got tired of blaming the other person & life in general!

I’d love to help, stuck and stagnant…however…

You’re not really telling me what’s happening that brings you to this point.

Perhaps you don’t really know?

You see, we can all hit a point in our lives when we feel this way. We’re engaging in the same negative patterns and behaviors and can’t understand why it has to be this way.

We look at our lives and say, “jeez is this all there is?” Or we look at the people in our lives and realize they are just not good for me, but at least I have people in my life.

In any case, we have to identify WHY we’re feeling this way.

Is it because?

  • The job is just not as fulfilling as it use to be?
  • We are stuck in relationships that are not growing (or one person is and the other isn’t?)?
  • Where we are is not where we wanted to be at this point in our lives?

What is the WHY of where you are that keeps you stuck and stagnant, my friend?

This is where you have to start.

When you’re ready to identify that piece, the next piece is simple.

  • What will change it for you?
  • What are you willing to do to change it?
  • Who do you have to become to change it?

After 18 years in a corporate job, I awoke one morning and asked myself, “is this all there is?” And very soon after that I found the profession of coaching. I wanted to pursue it like I had most things in my life… I wanted to go to school and learn how to do it properly.

I got a loan to pay for the school and flew to Seattle, WA for 3 weekends to learn how to be a coach. I spend 6 months having my coaching calls monitored to see if I learned how to do it well. And I received my certification after a year of training and an exam.

Let me tie this example to the questions I asked earlier.

What will it change for you?

I got excited and reenergized about something new in my life and not just the same old job and career. Now I had a NEW career to pursue.

What are you willing to do to change it?

I had to get a loan which I’d not done since buying a car. I had to get on a plane and travel to the West Coast, spend money on hotels and cars to stay in an area I was unfamiliar with. I had to use vacation time from work to do all of this.

Who do I have to become to change it?

I had to believe in my ability to “be” a coach. Not only that, but to be the coach the school wanted me to be, in order to be certified.

I realized I had actually been a coach my whole life and that was why it appealed to me, but I had to do it THEIR way. So I said, ok, but once I get my certification…as the song goes…”I gotta be me!”

I shared this, stuck and stagnant, not to encourage you to make the kind of drastic change I made…well,  not so drastic — I didn’t pursue my coaching career full time for 5 more years, leaving the safety of a corporate career.

I wanted to give you an example of what we ALL can go through and the opportunities it can present for you.

Your awareness of being stuck and stagnant is actually a blessing in disguise because you’re being called to do something different and this is your opportunity to just say, “yes” to what’s next for you.

Identify what’s causing you to be in this place…you can journal, meditate, or talk to a trusted friend.

Then, allow that which is meant to move you out of this place, to move you out of this place.

If you allow it, you’ll be given the inspiration to receive it.

And then, go with all the gusto you have, toward it…and know that better is on its way to you.

Sending my best and most excited joy your way for what’s next…
