Conversations: Overthinking it

Hi Chris,

How do you let things go? I keep replaying/overthinking stuff and it just doesn’t help me.

Do you let things go easily? Do you have any steps I can take?

Signed,

Overthinking it

The shortest and quickest answer is…I don’t always let things go easily.

However.

I believe this is a skill you can develop over time, overthinking it. There is no quick, short remedy to this.

In our current environment of constant stimulation, you’d think we’d move on to the next thought instantly, right? But it’s not always the case.. We’ll just simply circle back to it the minute we can.

Now, I don’t entirely think it’s a bad thing to replay/overthink something. If it’s something that is giving us stress, it may be an opportunity to find what we’re overlooking in it.

  • It could be we recognize that “this is stupid” and I’m giving it more thought and energy than I should. And then we release it.
  • It could be that we’re being invited to see something, we had been overlooking, to avoid what is really happening. And it won’t let go until you do.
  • It could be that it’s a growth opportunity, we’re resisting for our emotional, physical, spiritual path. And yet, your heart and mind are open to embracing it.

For these reasons and more, overthinking it, I don’t entirely find it a “bad” think to replay/overthink things.

One tool that might help you, if you’re open to it, is to journal.

Oftentimes when we write things out, it gets it out of our heads and in front of our eyes. It is then that we can discover the gift that is present in your thinking and feelings.

If it stays in our head, without the space to “work it out” we just spiral the thoughts over and over again.

So give that a shot…journal what you’re replaying/overthinking.

If you don’t see the “gift” in it immediately, no worries.

Just walk away from it for a day or two and come back to read it.

You’ll likely resolve and release what’s within and move on to more exciting and nurturing thoughts!

Good luck!
